Parents of 5 kids ask their return

TEXARKANA – The parents of five boys who have been placed in foster care said Wednesday that they have left the Tony Alamo Christian Ministries and will work together to regain custody of their children.

“We’re hopeful that we can get our kids back, the sooner the better,” Jose Avila said, standing next to his wife, Becky, at the Miller County Courthouse in Texarkana. “We’re going to work and do everything we can to get them back, so they can be back with their dad and mom.”

72-year-old Tony Alamo, who got his start as a ’street preacher’ in Hollywood in the 70’s, is currently in federal lock up in Ft. Smith Arkansas. He is charged with violating the Mann Act – transporting six of his underage ‘church’ girls across state lines for immoral purposes, specifically pornography. His trial is set for February.

A day after hearing testimony that a 17-year-old boy had been beaten with a wooden paddle by a member of the Tony Alamo Christian Ministries, a judge ordered the teenager to stay in foster care for 10 more days until he turns 18.
