Food donations from Trader Joe’s to Tony Alamo Ministries help the cult ensnare vulnerable, needy people in their abusive group.

According to survivors of the Tony Alamo Christian Ministries cult in Canyon Country, California, nearby Trader Joe’s is donating food to the church as part of their charitable program to supply food to needy organizations. Unfortunately, rather than simply offering the food to those who need it, the ministry (operating under the name 21st Century Tabernacle) gives food only to those who come to its nightly services, then use these services to convince vulnerable visitors to become part of the church, often giving up their entire savings and all of their subsequent income to the church, says a source. According to one survivor, the food is sometimes repackaged and sold at open air markets, rather than fed to the needy.

Tony Alamo, who gives the church its name and heads the ministry, is currently serving a 175-year prison sentence for sexually abusing girls as young as eight years old by taking them as “wives.” Other children have been reportedly beaten or otherwise abused.

While the Trader Joe’s food giving program is a wonderful extension of generosity, Tony Alamo’s “charity” is exploiting that generosity in order to ensnare susceptible people.

Please ask Trader Joe’s to end their support of Tony Alamo Ministries and give instead to a worthwhile hunger organization.
