Florida attorney Phillip Kuhn makes a statement Thursday outside the Federal courthouse in Texarkana. Kuhn filed a lawsuit against the Arkansas Department of Human Services on behalf of the church and two fathers whose children are in foster care.

Alamo’s ministry, 2 parents sue state

The Tony Alamo Christian Ministries and two of its members sued the Arkansas Department of Human Services in federal court Thursday, saying the department has “engaged in a systematic, persistent and continuous campaign of harassment and intimidation against the church.”

The suit in U.S. District Court in Texarkana cites the removal of 36 children from the ministry and requirements that their parents move off church property and find jobs outside the ministry to regain custody. The department says the children are endangered by practices that include underage marriages and beatings for violations of church rules. It is continuing to search for 92 other children believed at risk.

Jailed evangelist Tony Alamo has added another attorney to his defense team – and this one has experience defending a religious leader in a high-profile case.

U.S. District Judge Harry F. Barnes issued an order Monday officially recognizing Don Ervin of Houston as one of Alamo’s attorneys.

Alamo changes defense attorneys

Defense attorney Danny Davis became famous for his work in the McMartin Preschool case in Manhattan Beach, Calif., which drew national publicity in the 1980s for its allegations of satanic rituals, secret rooms and mass molestations of children.

Davis is now representing evangelist Tony Alamo, who also faces lurid and widely publicized allegations of abuse. But Davis said he sees few similarities between Alamo’s case and the one against McMartin Preschool worker Raymond Buckey, which ended with prosecutors dropping charges in 1990 and spawned an HBO movie.

TEXARKANA – A judge on Tuesday upheld the removal of 18 children from the Tony Alamo Christian Ministries, saying the children were endangered by the ministry’s history of punishing misbehavior with beatings and of allowing underage marriages.
