Now and Then: Fleeting Memories of the Alamo Foundation
Good and evil. Black and white. Those contrasts ran through my mind while reading about the recent death of infamous cult leader Tony Alamo. Tony, his wife Susan, and a disparate collection of lost souls inhabited the SCV for a few brief years in the early ‘70s, adding a bit of colorful perplexity to our sage brush-covered canyons. The evangelical couple reigned over a cadre of young homeless people “rescued” from drug-infested streets in Los Angeles. They established a headquarters north of the Soledad Canyon/Sierra Highway junction that professed to grant salvation through hard work and strict religious practices.

Evangelist Tony Alamo, whose anti-Catholic, gay-bashing rants attracted hundreds of followers and made him a millionaire, died this week in prison where he was serving a 175-year term for raping young girls he called his child brides. He was 82.

Tony Alamo dies in prison
Cult leader was serving 175 years for bringing girls across state lines for sex
Imprisoned evangelist Tony Alamo died Tuesday while in custody at the Federal Medical Center in Butner, N.C., according to a spokeswoman for the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
The 82-year-old Alamo, whose given name was Bernie Lazar Hoffman, was convicted in July 2009 0in a Texarkana federal court of bringing five girls he wed as children across state lines for sex. Later that year, he was sentenced to 175 years in federal prison by U.S. District Judge Harry Barnes in the Texarkana Division of the Western District of Arkansas.
