Tony Alamo trial expected to last 2 weeks

A defense lawyer for jailed evangelist Tony Alamo says his federal trial on child-sex charges will last two weeks in Texarkana.

Houston lawyer Don Ervin says Alamo’s defense team will “politely seek the truth” from the alleged victims. Prosecutors largely will base their case on witness testimony as Alamo’s trial starts Monday.

Prosecutors and defense lawyers met in a closed-door meeting with U.S. District Judge Harry F. Barnes for about an hour Friday morning. In a court filing, prosecutors said Alamo “married” underage girls he had allegedly had sex with, exchanging wedding vows and giving them rings.

Alamo has pleaded not guilty to a 10-count indictment accusing him of taking young girls across state lines for sex.
