Calif. hearing in 1988 Alamo case delayed
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) – A man accused in a 1988 beating of a child at a Tony Alamo Christian Ministries compound in California will get a preliminary hearing April 6 after a court session scheduled for Friday was postponed, according to a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles district attorney.
Spokeswoman Jane Robison says Douglas Christopher, 55, will appear in San Fernando Superior Court to face a felony count of child abuse and one felony count of corporal injury to a child.
Alamo faced similar charges in 1991, but the case fell away until Christopher turned himself in at a California courthouse at the request of Arkansas child welfare officials.
The evangelist’s current lawyer, Danny Davis, represented him in the 1991 case, which stemmed from a 1988 beating of an 11-year-old boy at an Alamo compound.
