Houston Attorney Represents Another Tarnished Evangelist
Houston attorney Don Ervin has apparently become the go-to guy for (allegedly, allegedly) sleazy televangelists.
Ervin represented Jim Bakker (of PTL and Tammy Faye fame) when he was fighting charges of mail fraud; now he’s representing Tony Alamo, a 74-year-old preacher accused of crossing state lines to have sex with underage girls.
He’ll have to be on the ball to do a better job than fellow Alamo attorney Danny Davis, whose defense to the media consisted of saying Alamo didn’t have the eyesight to drive or the…you know, physical capability…to do what he’s accused of.
Sure, you may be getting me an acquittal guy, but you’re ruining my reputation with the ladies!
Davis represented the defendants in the famous McMartin day-care abuse case, so — on the other hand — he probably knows what he’s doing.
Alamo faces a 10-count federal indictment. Here’s his defense on the charges.
The gist of it:
The newspapers keep printing and the news media keeps broadcasting that Pastor Alamo “has maintained that ‘consent is puberty,'” that the age of consent to have sex is at puberty.
Pastor Alamo NEVER said that. What he said was that the age of consent TO BE MARRIED should be at puberty, and that young women should be allowed to marry at puberty rather than committing fornication, which will send their souls to hell.
Ooooookay.
